The Resurgence of the Wellington Barbershop

The last decade in Wellington has marked the resurgence of the traditional barbershop. More than 19 new barbershops have opened in the Wellington CBD. A once ubiquitous mark in all major cities around the world, the barber & barbershop gave way to the stylist and salon with the long hair trends made famous by the Beatles and other icons through the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s.

Men are again taking the time & effort to look and feel good with grooming, the quickest way to achieve this is with a great haircut. At Dukes Barbers we are much more than a ‘blades and fades’ barbershop, encompassing old school skill & tradition with modern skills and techniques.

Vintage trends which originated in the 1920’s – 1950’s are back favoring the barbershop and its simple practicality. Women are taking advantage of the barbershop resurgence too with around 20 percent of our clientele being female. It shows the evolution of the modern barbershop which encompasses both men & women, keeping the old school tradition and nostalgia whilst dropping the hyper-masculinity.
