Beard Trims, Shaping &
Cut-Throat Shaves

No two beards grow quite the same. Short stubble, a full beard or something different, getting the length, shape and outline right is most of the job.
‍
Every beard trim starts with a quick chat about length and shape. The beard is then trimmed, shaped and edged with clippers and scissors, the cheek line, neckline and moustache are tidied, and it’s finished with beard oil. The cut-throat shave is a traditional wet shave: hot towels to soften the hair, warm lather, then a straight razor for a clean, close finish.

In the shop we use and stock Lambert’s oils and balms alongside American Crew grooming products, and we're always happy to recommend a product or explain how to look after a beard at home.

Shaving and beard work have been part of the trade here since we were Janis Hairdressing in the 1930s, we we're one of the first and only shops in the Wellington city to offer do them and while styles have changed and close shaving is something that happens more at home than in a barbershop we have kept our skills tidy for all things around beard grooming and cut-throat shaves. They might be a bit of a dying art, but at Dukes it’s still done the same way.

We've got all the products to help look after a beard between visits mostly comes down to regular trims and a little care. Beard oil softens coarse hair and stops the skin underneath from drying out. The barbers are always happy to recommend a product or explain how to look after a beard at home.

Beard Trim & Shave FAQs

How long does a traditional cut-throat shave take?

We always allow for about 40 minutes, including hot towels and lather. Walk-ins are welcome, but booking online is the best way to guarantee a time.

Can I get a beard trim while I get a haircut?

Yes. A beard trim can be added to any haircut, just mention it to your barber.

How often should a beard be trimmed?

Honestly we don't have an answer, it's completely up to you and the style your rocking. Every two to four weeks keeps most beards in shape before they start getting slightly out hand. If you have a shorter style and would like help with continuous maintence, we have clients that come specially for weekly beard trims and lineups.
